Poem: Colours
They gather these people, from here and afar
All following One Bright Star,
For they are the sentinels holding the flame,
That burns of the faith that they are.
Past ages now heard in these voices anew,
For such is that legacy,
The music of ancients brought once more to life,
Their worlds through this shall we now see.
This cultural heritage vibrant again,
Long founded in that old fair land,
This County remarkaable blazing a trail,
Creating this choir – and this band.
Yes, they are the hope and the means and the way,
To hold onto songs of lost age,
Generations long gone speak again urgently,
Appearing once more from mute page.
Their name is ‘The Ridgeway’, ’tis there on the map,
Due south of our Dorchester town,
The home of one Hardy and Barnes you should know,
Amongst those who handed such down.
So, ‘Colours’ they wear when performing their art,
Are of our dear Dorset held high
This red, white and yellow adorns our proud flag,
Tradition thus held … shall not die.
